Last Sunday, I shared that a friend once remarked that “We are all light benders!” That is true in the physical sense, we are seen because we reflect (bend) light off our bodies. And it is true in the spiritual sense: we reflect (bend) the light we receive from God, and send it back into the world. This is our life’s work.
The work of the Lenten Journey, as we proceed with Jesus to Jerusalem and the Cross, is to peel off whatever keeps us from reflecting God’s pure light and love back into the world. This is difficult work. The things that keep us from being perfect reflectors of God’s love and light are often integral parts of what we know as our own selves. So close that we cannot see them. And the more we peel back, the more is revealed.
But God’s pure love and light shine on us and within us all the time. On that we can rely, even if we are not aware. So we can journey on, like Jesus did, boldly with God.
