Dear Friends in Christ,
My wife and I have taken the opportunity to get away to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center for a few days of cross-country skiing. While it is not “deserted” here, it is quiet. More importantly, we are set apart from the demands of the world, our daily routines and responsibilities, even our beloved dog. My wife will tell you, I am a man of routine, so just being “away” is restorative.
Jesus, too, got away, often to the frustration of his disciples and followers. As you read the Gospels, you will see that Jesus established a pattern: periods of hard work - teaching, challenging, healing; followed by periods away up, in the mountains or even out at sea, to pray and rest. Work, rest; work, prayer; work contemplation. Even God takes the seventh day for rest!
It is important to be intentional about breaking up our daily routines and work with times “away.” And not feel guilty for doing it. It is a holy pattern. A holy way of life.
